Ciao tutti -

NEXT ENGLISH MEETING of the 2017-2018 PROGRAM YEAR
THIS COMING WEDNESDAY

We are very please to announce that our English meeting presenter next Wednesday May 9 will be Rob Prufer who has presented at Dante several times over the past few years.  His subject at the May meeting will be Michelangelo's Pietà.  Rob's lectures are always a highlight of the season - interactive, full of curious and intriguing facts, great slides and thought-provoking insights.  Here is Rob's description of his upcoming talk:

"Upon completing his Pietà, now in St. Peter’s, Michelangelo wrote to his father that he had made the 'impossible possible.' Indeed, the contract had assured the patron that Michelangelo would produce the most beautiful work in Rome. And all agreed that he had. But when he got the job he was only twenty-two with very little on his resume. He was penniless and sleeping on friends’ couches, unable to put up his brother visiting from Florence. How did Michelangelo get this choice commission, which he completed astonishingly in under one year? And how did he intend for us to experience the work? He didn’t create it for St. Peter’s, either the original, 4th-century church or the current basilica. And he certainly didn’t want us to look up at it, as we do now. And what are the circumstances that led to its placement behind bullet-proof glass? Join us to explore Michelangelo’s Pietà."

Rob Prufer is a long-time Dante member. He is an avid student of the Italian language and Italian art history. He shares his passion for art history with his students at Newport High School and with the wider public in his lecture series at the Bellevue Arts Museum, The Loggia Lectures.

As usual our Pre-Dante Pasta Dinner will be ready at 6:30 and the program will start at 7:30.  Please feel free to bring an antipasto, dolce, or vino to share. The cost of the dinner is $8 per person or $15 per couple.

If you plan to come for the dinner as well as the presentation, please make your reservation by 5:00pm Monday May 7 by clicking on the button below or calling the Activity Line (425) 243-7663.  This will help our volunteer cooks know how much pasta to prepare.

The meeting will be in our usual place, Garden House, 2336 15th Avenue South (In the Beacon Hill neighborhood of Seattle).  Directions are on the DAS website:  http://www.danteseattle.org/gather.html. If you want to avoid traffic snarls, you can also take Link Light Rail to the Beacon Hill Station. The Garden House is a short 5 minute walk away.

Feel free to come early to help set up the room and start visiting.  And, in any case, please come.

A presto -
Dan DeMatteis,
