SUMMARY:English Language Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Mark McGregor \nTopic:  The Liberation of Rome in WWII\nPresentation:\nMark McGregor presents on the many liberators who freed Rome from the looming chaos of utter destruction of World War Two. In July 1943 the grip of Benito Mussolini’s fascism was temporarily loosened as Allied troops landed in Sicily. Nazi Germany\, however\, sent divisions of its troops to prevent Italy from surrendering to the Allies. Romans faced death from attacks by German and the Allies. When Italy declared the armistice of September 8\, the violence unleashed by German forces was directed at nearly 25\,000 Allied prisoners of war (POWs)\, out of a total 80\,000\, fled their campos. Within Rome itself was the neutral state of Vatican City that had many influential actors. A wide variety of Romans and Italians played heroic\, ambivalent\, and deadly roles in the descent of the inferno that raged in Rome for 11 months. This evening will explore the people and groups who lived and died trying to save the Eternal City. \nAbout the Speaker:\nMark McGregor\, SJ is a Jesuit priest who served as an U.S. Air Force chaplain in Italy and has been researching and writing a trilogy of screenplays on Rome during World War Two. In addition to his nine years of serving as a chaplain\, he has taught screenwriting and film making at Fairfield University and Gonzaga University. He is passionate about storytelling and dedicated to shining a light on people who oppose the darkness of tyranny.                                                                         \n \nMake your reservation for dinner by 5 pm Monday March 9.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Donald De Santis\nTopic: The Venetian Empire\n\nPresentation:\nThe Venetian Empire\, known as the Stato di Mare\, was one of the richest and most powerful entities in Europe from late antiquity up through the early modern era. Born of necessity – Romans fleeing foreign invasions – Venice had a foot in multiple cultures. For hundreds of years the city owed allegiance to the Byzantine empire in the east\, but it was also firmly grounded in Western Europe. At one point the city was the largest and richest city in Western Europe. Venice had its own unique culture and traditions\, and its own dialect of Italian. In this presentation we will explore the foundation stories\, the rise as a great power that controlled much of the Eastern Mediterranean\, and its long slow decline. No longer a great power\, the city was still rich and had to reinvent itself\, in some ways as a playground for the rest of Europe. We will look briefly at the challenges the city faces in the 21st century. \nAbout the Speaker:\nDon De Santis has a passion for history. He received his B.A. in History from Loyola Marymount University and has traveled to five continents and roughly thirty countries. He also has degrees from USC and the University of Washington and is working on his M.A. in History from Eastern Washington University. From 2014 to 2020 he was a regular speaker on Rome for the Rick Steves Travel Center in Edmonds. Since 2018 he has been a speaker for several cruise lines on cruises in Europe and North America. His presentations cover the history\, art and culture of the places visited.                                                       \n \nMake your reservation for dinner by 5 pm Monday November 10.

SUMMARY:Italian Language Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Rebecca Albiani \nTopic: Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio \nPresentation: Caravaggio has the longest rap sheet of any major artist\, but the volatile young artist changed the course of Western art. He introduced gritty realism into Baroque painting with his edgy subject matter (fortune tellers and cardsharps)\, while his dramatic chiaroscuro and use of authentic lower-class models in altarpieces such as The Calling of St. Matthew (1600) increased the expressive power of his work\, which shocked church officials and fascinated the Roman populace. \nAbout the Speaker: Rebecca Albiani has been an arts lecturer at the Frye Art Museum since 1997. A former Graduate Lecturing Fellow at the National Gallery in Washington D.C.\, and a Fulbright Scholar in Venice\, she holds an MA from Stanford University and a BA from the University of California\, Berkeley.
