SUMMARY:February 12\, 2020 English Language Meeting
DESCRIPTION:When: February 12\, 2020Speaker: Prof. Lloyd HowardTopic: The Power of Music on the Shore of Dante’s Purgatory \nAbout the Speaker:\nLloyd Howard received his PhD from the Johns Hopkins University in 1976\, after which\, the subsequent year\, he was appointed to a tenure-track position at the University of Victoria\, where he taught until his retirement at the rank of Professor in 2016.  Along with teaching in the Department over 39 years\, he served as Chair of the Department of Hispanic and Italian Studies for a total of 15 years\, Acting Dean of the Faculty of Humanities for six-month terms in 1997 and 2000\, and Director of the Medieval Studies Program for 3 years.  His research focussed initially on the extant poetry of Guido Cavalcanti\, before turning to Dante’s Commedia.  His approach to interpreting this work follows an alternate\, non-linear journey through Dante’s three realms of the afterlife.  The signposts that mark the way consist of recurrent linguistic patterns\, or formulas\, by which the reader is guided through the space that comprises the poem’s 100 cantos.  Along with numerous articles\, he has written two books adopting this method: Formulas of Repetition in Dante’s Commedia: Signposted Journeys across Textual Space (Montreal: McGill-Queen’s University Press\, 2001); Virgil the Blind Guide: Marking the Way through the Divine Comedy (Montreal: McGill-Queen’s University Press\, 2010).  Scholarly recognition of his methodology includes the former book being chosen as an “Outstanding Title” for 2002 by the American Library Association\, and one of its chapters being selected by Harold Bloom to form part of Bloom’s edition on the Commedia: Dante Alighieri\, published in 2011.  His articles in more recent years have been published by Letteratura Italiana Antica in Rome. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n About the Presentation:\nProfessor Howard will begin his talk with a brief description of Dante’s world and how the Commedia was transmitted both in written form and orally by singing Dante’s text. He will then turn to the second canto of the Purgatorio\, where Dante introduces the soul of the musician\, Casella\, who\, while living\, sang Dante’s love poems. He will explore how Casella’s “encore” performance of Dante’s song\, “Amor che ne la mente mi ragiona\,” goes wrong\, as opposed to the Psalm “In exitu Israel de Aegypto\,”sung in tonus peregrinus by all the delivered pilgrim souls earlier.  Lastly\, Professor Howard will discuss the Paradiso where\, by flight through the music enhanced spheres\, Dante\, a famed writer of worldly love songs\, reaches the Celestial Rose and\, in contrast to when his attention was focused on unworthy loves\, the once straying poet fixes his attentive eyes upward to the Virgin Mary\, whose intercession brings Dante the pilgrim home to God.

SUMMARY:An Avant-Garde Italia: The Futurists\, Modern Art and the Promise of the 20th Century
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Rob Prufer \nIn 1909 the writer Filippo Tommaso Marinetti published his Futurist Manifesto\, in which he denounced the oppressive weight of Italy’s past and advocated a program of radical artistic\, social and technological innovation. Soon\, painters\, sculptors\, writers and musicians joined Marinetti in a quest to re-fashion Italian culture and are known collectively as The Futurists. SUMMARY:September 11\, 2019 English Language Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Dante Alighieri Society English Language Meeting Dominic Minotti Dominico Minotti Famous Women of Italian Descent Kicking off this year’s schedule will be a presentation by Domenico Minotti (Nick) on “Famous Women of Italian Descent”. This will be the basis for this year’s Festa Italiana quiz that Nick has been creating for the past few years to use at our booth. For Festa\, reference information will be available to help visitors pick the woman who fits the description. The names of folks with successful entries (8 out of 10) will be entered into a drawing for a free dinner at one of our Dante events. The September 11 presentation for Dante\, however\, will be a straightforward talk about these 10 women\, 6 well known\, 2 less known and 2 probably new to most Dante members. In the late 1920s\, Nick’s parents emigrated from Sant’Angelo\, Limosano\, a small hilltop town in Molise. The population at that time was about 1000 but is now 345 as Nick learned on a visit this summer. The family spoke their dialect at home. Nick studied Italian at Columbia University and Perugia and gotlots of practice while on Fulbright study grants in Milan in the mid 60’s.Nick returned to the states and to his first love\, medicine\, at Georgetown University and came to Seattle in 1976 to work at the US Public Health Hospital on Beacon Hill\, better known as the Marine Hospital. He and his father Pasquale would attend Dante meetings back then but took a break until retirement a few years ago. Nick serves as a Consigliere for our Dante group.

It is the largest region of Italy\, and the 4th most populous\, with over 5 million people. We will explore the history\, language\, terroirs and culture of Sicily. Sicily has a rich and ancient history\, going back to the original tribes that moved onto the island\, to the Classical era\, when Greece\, then the Romans\,maintained large presences in the area. In the modern eras\, the island has been occupied by a variety of empires\, and it is of tremendous strategic importance in the Mediterranean\, due to several deep water ports\, location in the center of the sea\, and the vast agricultural bounty of the land. The Sicilian language has influences from the Greek\, Italian\, Arabic and more. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion. The presentation will be in Italian and in Sicilian\, and there will be a handout with words in English\, Italian and\, for some parts\, in Sicilian. As for culture\, for example two Nobel prize winners in Literature (of the total of six from Italy) were born in Sicily\, awarded in 1934 to Luigi Pirandello (Agrigento\, where the Valley of the Temples is located)\, and in 1959 to Salvatore Quasimodo (Modica\, known for Baroque architecture and where chocolate is made in the ancient way). \nBio: \nMatteo FitzGerald is of Sicilian (mother) & Irish-American (father) descent.
