English Language Meeting

March 11, 2026 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Speaker: Mark McGregor

Topic:  The Liberation of Rome in WWII

Presentation:

Mark McGregor presents on the many liberators who freed Rome from the looming chaos of utter destruction of World War Two. In July 1943 the grip of Benito Mussolini’s fascism was temporarily loosened as Allied troops landed in Sicily. Nazi Germany, however, sent divisions of its troops to prevent Italy from surrendering to the Allies. Romans faced death from attacks by German and the Allies. When Italy declared the armistice of September 8, the violence unleashed by German forces was directed at nearly 25,000 Allied prisoners of war (POWs), out of a total 80,000, fled their campos. Within Rome itself was the neutral state of Vatican City that had many influential actors. A wide variety of Romans and Italians played heroic, ambivalent, and deadly roles in the descent of the inferno that raged in Rome for 11 months. This evening will explore the people and groups who lived and died trying to save the Eternal City.
