When: January 8, 2025
Speaker: Cecilia Strettoi
Topic: The Piccirilli Brothers
Location: Online

The Social “hour” begins at 7 pm. Presentation begins at 7:30

Meeting Topic:

Cecilia Strettoi speaks about the rise of the Piccirilli brothers – renowned marble cutters & creators of iconic US landmarks. The marble Michelangelo chiseled into his masterpiece, David, in 1501 came from the quarries of Massa Carrara, a region in Tuscany known for producing generations of skilled stonecutters. These artisans honed their craft by replicating the masterpieces of the past, passing down both technical expertise and aesthetic sensibility. At the end of the 19th century, some of these artisans emigrated to America, bringing with them their refined skills and rich artistic heritage. In this presentation, we will explore the story of the Piccirilli brothers, Italian-born sculptors, who played a crucial role in shaping New York City’s visual identity, creating iconic sculptures. Despite their enduring influence, the Piccirilli brothers are not as widely recognized as other artists of the period. This presentation aims to uncover their extraordinary legacy and explore how their craftsmanship helped define some of the most important public spaces in the United States.
