Topic: Some Major Milestones in the History of Italian-Americans in Seattle

About the speaker
Alessi Perfetti is a second-year undeclared undergraduate student at the University of Washington, pursuing a major in the arts and humanities. In English, they use they/them pronouns, and in Italian they use the masculine pronoun lui. They are a third-generation Italian American, a first-generation Seattelite, and a passionate creative and student of history and culture.

Description of the Topic
Alessi’s research covers the role of Italian immigrants in building the city of Seattle, including their labor in regrading the land the city is built on, the Italian management of Pike Place Market, the development of the Italian American Atlantic community, and the impacts of major events on the Italian American community including the second World War and the building of I-90. The presentation will provide a chronological depiction of the experiences of Italian Americans in central and south Seattle through the present day, and it will provide critical context through the lenses of race, ethnicity, and immigrant status.

All in-person meetings take place on Wednesday evenings at the Greenwood Senior Center,  (unless otherwise specified). Doors open at 6:00pm with presentations at 7:30.

RSVPs are requested by 5 pm on the Monday before English language meetings where dinner is served ($10/person). Italian language meetings are preceded by potluck antipasti. No RSVP is required for those meetings.
