Our annual Festa di Natale is Wednesday, December 11

As usual we’ll celebrate the season with the traditional Italian game of tombola – a kind of Italian Bingo for those not familiar with the game.  There are several prizes to be awarded so you might be a winner!  It’s lots of fun for all.

Bruce Leone will be our tomboliere this year.

And of course we’ll have Italian Christmas music.  Be prepared to sing as Joyce Ramee will lead us in a few Italian Christmas songs.

Traditionally the Festa meal is a potluck.  In the spirit of the Italian love of food, please bring along a main course, antipasto or dessert.  And a bottle of vino to share is always a good addition.  The microwave and oven are available if any of the dishes need to be heated up at the last minute.  You can always count on a lot of great food to add to the holiday merriment at our Festa.

And to toast the spirit of the season, there’ll be a few bottles of prosecco to start things off in style.

Parking is available in St. Patrick’s parking lot, off E. Edgar street. The meetings take place in the Parish Hall, located in the basement of the church which is entered from the West side of the church from the parking lot.

To reach St Patrick’s from the North, follow I-5 S.  Take exit 168A for Boylston Ave toward Roanoke St.  Merge onto Boylston, turn left at light onto E Roanoke St.  Turn left at the first cross street onto Harvard Ave E. and then take the first right onto E. Edgar Street.

Federica Gabardi, a Milan native and a Women’s Empowerment Expert will be our guest speaker.

Milan is glamorous, trendy and fashionable. It is very much appreciated by tourists who have rewarded it with a boom in arrivals: about 8.4 million in 2017. This number has guaranteed Milan the fourteenth place in the ranking of the most visited cities in the world, once again surpassing Rome at seventeenth with 7.3 million visitors.

In short, Milan has proven to have secret weapons that are not limited to the attractiveness of the businesses that the city has always hosted: from the Romanesque churches to Milan Cathedral, from the Castello Sforzesco to Leonardo’s locks along the Naviglio, from the hidden courtyards to the award-winning “Bosco Verticale.”

This presentation will encourage your love of Milan and help you discover what is the basis of its place in the panorama of the great European and world cities.

Our November presenter is Chris Kelly who will speak about his book on Italian military exploits throughout the ages, Italy Invades.

Italy Invades is an action packed history of Italy’s military involvements throughout the ancient and modern worlds. From the empire building of the Romans, through the globe-spanning Age of Exploration, to the multinational cooperation of NATO, Italy has conquered and explored countries as diverse and far-ranging as Cape Verde and Mongolia and Uruguay. With the additional guide of maps and photographs, the reader can visually follow the Italians as they conquer the world.

Christopher Kelly, the former chairman of Chyron Corporation, has had a lifelong passion for military history. A graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, Kelly is Italian by marriage. He lives in London and Seattle, when he is not invading new cities to promote his published works.

Exciting things are happening this November for lovers of things Italian.

First of all, the lineup for SIFF’s Cinema Italian Style, November 7-14 has been announced. I’ve included some info below as well as a link to their website for more information: https://www.siff.net/year-round-cinema/film-festivals/cinema-italian-style This is a great opportunity to see some of the latest and best of Italian Cinema. Dante is once again this year a sponsor of the festival. I hope to see many of you there.

Then, the Seattle Art Museum has an exhibit of art works from the Capodimonte Museum in Naples , Flesh & Blood: Italian Masterpieces from the Capodimonte Museum. Flesh and Blood offers a rare opportunity to experience the beauty of art from the 16th and 17th centuries from a Neapolitan point of view. It is truly a once in a lifetime experience, unless – that is – you’re lucky enough to make it to Naples some time! Sarebbe i migliori di tutti!

October 23, 2019 Italian Language Meeting

THE NEXT ITALIAN MEETING of the DANTE ALIGHIERI SOCIETY’S 2019-2020 PROGRAM YEAR IS THIS COMING WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 23 at St. Patrick’s Church, Social Hall, 815 East Edgar Street, Seattle 98102

The speaker will be Dr. Claudio Mazzola. Many of you will remember Claudio from his past presentations at Dante or from taking his classes. Claudio received his “Laurea” in English from the University of Milan in 1981 and a degree in cinema studies from the City University of Milan. He then went on to earn a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Washington in 1986. His area of expertise is Contemporary Italian fiction and Italian Cinema. He has published a number of articles on those topics.

Claudio’s topic this Wednesday will be “Italian Cinema and Immigration”. Italy, perhaps more than any other European country, has been at the forefront of the immigration debate in Europe. Immigration has been the subject of numerous Italian novels, documentaries and films. Our speaker will provide some historical background on immigration in Italy and discuss how cinema has dealt with this issue.

As a bonus, we will have passes available to Dante members for SIFF’s 11th annual Cinema Italian Style which will take place this year from November 7 – 14.
