English Language Meeting – October 11, 2023

October 11, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

La Settimana della lingua italiana nel mondo is held every year in the third week of October. Organized by the diplomatic-consular network and the Italian Cultural Institutes in collaboration with our main partners in linguistic promotion (MiC, MIM, MUR, CePeLL, Government of the Swiss Confederation, Accademia della Crusca, CGIE, Italian-speaking Radio and Television Community, Encyclopedia Institute Italiana Treccani, RAI Italia and Società Dante Alighieri), the Week has over time become the most important event on a global scale dedicated to the Italian language. Since its establishment in 2001, this event has annually received High Patronage from the Presidency of the Italian Republic.

This year, the Dante Alighieri Society of Washington anticipating the XXIII edition of La Settimana della Lingua Italiana del mondo from October 16 to October 22, whose theme this year is “L’italiano e la sostenibilità – Italian and sustainability”, presents:

When: October 11, 2023
Where: St. Clement’s Episcopal Church, 1501 32nd Ave. S, Seattle 98144
Speaker: Trevor Keaton Pogue
Topic: Salt, Mold, and Time: Three Months As A Tuscan Norcino’s Apprentice – Sale, muffa e tempo: 3 mesi da apprendista del Norcino toscano

In January 2023 Trevor left his day job as a residential property manager in Seattle to live on a 1100 acre organic farm in rural Tuscany. With no professional butchery experience Trevor began his training under master norcino, Riccio Pigozzo. For the next three months Trevor studied and practiced butchering and curing culturally protected cinta senese pigs using 500 year old Tuscan methods and ingredients. Salt, Mold, and Time is a presentation about the history and impact of Italian salumi, the ethics of farm to table butchery, and how when nothing else makes sense, sometimes the only sane thing to do is throw your life in the air and say “aah”.
