For our December 14 meeting, we plan on holding our traditional potluck Festa di Natale, with good food, wine, sparkling conviviality (all supplied by our members!) and a game of tombola. There will of course be prizes! There is no charge for attending this meeting.

Members and guests are encouraged to bring main courses, appetizers and/or desserts to share, as well as a bottle of wine. Your favorite Holiday recipe is welcome!!

We  hope you will feel comfortable enough to come to the party.  Our Festa di Natale is always a good way to kick off the Holiday season!

St. Clement’s Episcopal Church, 1501 32nd Ave. S, Seattle 98144, is in the Mt Baker neighborhood, just south of where I-90 meets Rainier Avenue. You may park in the church lot; there is also ample free street parking. Look for Dante signs at the lower entrance to the church, next to the garden.

English Language Meeting – November 9, 2022

When: November 9, 2022
Where: St. Clement’s Episcopal Church, 1501 32nd Ave. S, Seattle 98144
Speaker: Sam Ciapanna
Topic: Abruzzo – a great place to visit, an even better place to live

Abruzzo, forte e gentile, is one of the mostly unknown regions of Italy and treasure to discover. It is the most northern of the southern regions, a little over an hour from Rome yet nearly inaccessible until the autostrada was extended west to east across the Apennine mountains just a few decades ago. Geographically, it consists of rugged mountains, rolling hills, and pristine beaches – nearly 50% of which is protected. Its isolation has preserved its tradition and culture, making it a fascinating place to explore. Recent legislation aimed at boosting economic development in less populated areas has made Abruzzo a great place to retire.

Come out to learn some of why this region has captured Sam’s heart and taste one of Abruzzo’s signature desserts – Pizza Dogge.

Long time Dante member and former president, Sam Ciapanna, will talk to us tonight about the little-known region of Abruzzo. He first visited it briefly to meet relatives in 1997 as two of his grandparents were born in Abruzzo and each subsequent visit was longer. In 2019, he and his husband purchased a home in Colonnella, just due passi from where his paternal grandfather was born. Sharing his love for Abruzzo has become a passion for him with plans to retire there in less than two years.

English Language Meeting – October 12, 2022

When: October 12, 2022
Where: St. Clement’s Episcopal Church, 1501 32nd Ave. S, Seattle 98144
Speaker: Domenico Minotti
Topic: Festa Italiana Quiz: Tidbits and Trivia of Italian Cuisine

For the past several years, Domenico Minotti has been our quiz-maker for the Dante booth at the annual Festa Italiana at Seattle Center. Domenico has prepared another fun quiz for Festa Italiana, this time looking at the variety and wonder of Italian cuisine.

In the late 1920s, Domenico’s parents emigrated from Sant’Angelo, Limosano, a small hilltop town in Molise. The population at that time was about 1000 but is now 345 as Domenico learned on a visit last year. The family spoke their dialect at home. Domenico studied Italian at Columbia University and Perugia and got lots of practice while on Fulbright study grants in Milan in the mid 60’s. Domenico returned to the states and to his first love, medicine, at Georgetown University and came to Seattle in 1976 to work at the US Public Health Hospital on Beacon Hill, better known as the Marine Hospital. He and his father Pasquale would attend Dante meetings back then, but took a break until retirement a few years ago. Domenico serves as a Consigliere for our Dante group.
