English Language Meeting – November 11, 2020

When: November 11, 2020
Speaker: Pat Hoffman
Topic: Seated at Lorenzo’s Table – From Farm to Table
Location: Online

About the Speaker:

Pat grew up on the east coast and had a long career in immunological research at both for-profit and non-profit institutions. After a year of retirement, she started a 2nd career as a part-time paralegal for a small law firm and is now working part-part-time, giving her more time to travel.  Pat is a Dante member whose passion for Italy was ignited in 2002 when her daughter, Kelcey, moved to Italy to work in Rome.  Eighteen years and numerous visits later, the desire to discover the beauty of Italy’s diverse regions is still strong and the love of the art, food, wine and people continues to grow and satisfy.  She is delighted that she is able to have conversations with “la gente” using her modest command of the Italian language.

About the Presentation:

FarmerChef Lorenzo Polegri owns Ristorante Zeppelin in the enchanting Umbrian town of Orvieto, Italy.  Invited several times to cook at the James Beard house in NYC, he also cooked for President Obama at the White House in 2010.

Ristorante Zeppelin is home to Chef Lorenzo’s internship program for culinary students and his cooking school, featuring afternoon cooking classes and one-week and two-week “culinary adventures” that include cooking classes and visits to the sources that produce the ingredients used in Chef Lorenzo’s recipes.  Join six friends on their excellent adventure who spent two weeks with Chef Lorenzo immersed in the history and culinary experiences of the FarmerChef.

Italian Language Meeting – October 28, 2020

When: October 28, 2020
Speaker:
 Francesca Carmichael
Topic: Italian Linens and Hand-stamping in Romagna
Location: Online

There will be a “social hour” beginning at 7 pm. The presentation will start at 7:30.

Francesca Carmichael will speak about the hand-stamped, block print linens typical of the Romagna region of Italy. Francesca is the proprietor of Italian Linen Store ( http://www.italianlinenstore.com), a “molto italiano” store that is located in Bellevue. Its Italian hand-stamped linens for the home exemplify the antique craft that has continued to the present day with the products from Stamperia Bertozzi that, using traditional stamping techniques, offers a full range of decorative linens, from the classic to the contemporary.

Born and raised in Cremona, Francesca has lived in various countries and continents in the course of her life, beginning with her time at University, in Venice, then the Middle East, France and so forth, until she landed in Seattle in 2004. Here she opened her first shop in Woodinville importing from Italy antique furniture, hand-painted ceramics, decorative paper and stationery to textiles, a gradual and natural progression that compliments her own artistic nature.

Speaker: Domenico Minotti
Topic: “Festa Italiana” Quiz
Location: Online

A link will be emailed to the Dante Society Email list prior to the meeting. There will be a “social hour” beginning at 7 pm. The presentation will start at 7:30.

Agenda

Introductions – Joyce Ramée, President

Presentation – Domenico Minotti

For the past several years, Domenico Minotti (Nic) has been our quiz-maker for the Dante booth at the annual Festa Italiana at Seattle Center.  Although Festa Italiana could not be held this year, Nic has prepared a fun quiz for our first English meeting of the program year on one of the most common Italian foods.

In the late 1920s, Nick’s parents emigrated from Sant’Angelo, Limosano, a small hilltop town in Molise. The population at that time was about 1000 but is now 345 as Nick learned on a visit last year. The family spoke their dialect at home. Nick studied Italian at Columbia University and Perugia and got lots of practice while on Fulbright study grants in Milan in the mid 60’s. Nick returned to the states and to his first love, medicine, at Georgetown University and came to Seattle in 1976 to work at the US Public Health Hospital on Beacon Hill, better known as the Marine Hospital. He and his father Pasquale would attend Dante meetings back then but took a break until retirement a few years ago. Nick serves as a Consigliere for our Dante group.
